Frequently Asked Questions
Who Are You?
My name is Tyler Slay, and I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor. I grew up near the Reservoir in central Mississippi and now live in Rankin County with my wife and kids. We're members of Bellwether Church in Jackson, MS.
Who Do You Work With?
I work with adults, teenagers, children, couples, and families. I like to work with as many people in the family as possible to help the individual change what they can change and help the families change how they respond to the individual.
What Kinds of Issues Do You Help With?
I specialize in treating Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), anxiety, trauma (PTSD), and stress. I also work with clients struggling with perfectionism, boundary-setting and assertiveness, family conflict, pornography use, anger, failure to launch, relational conflicts, autism (Asperger’s), social skills challenges, tics, body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), and body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs), including skin picking & hair pulling disorders.
What Is Your Approach to Therapy?
I’m a big fan of evidence-based approaches to therapy that have been highly studied and proven effective. Some examples include Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for anxiety and stress, Behavioral Activation for depression, and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for trauma and PTSD. I also include attachment and trauma-informed perspectives to help build insight and increase self-compassion. While helping you move past these struggles with proven methods is my primary goal, I also want to build a meaningful relationship with you and support you in other areas of your life. My hope is to be your therapist not only for the issue that brought you in, but also for the other things you want to work through, such as your story, your relationships, and your future.
When Should Someone Seek Therapy?
In general, people seek therapy when a feeling or a behavior has been interfering with their life for a prolonged period of time. That is basically the definition of feeling “stuck.” Most of life’s problems come and go in their own time, but sometimes we have to be honest about the fact that they are not going away or are only getting worse. The good news is that many of these struggles can be worked on and improved with the help of some strategic effort and a guide that you trust.
Where Do You See Clients?
I see clients in person in my office at The Center for Hope and Healing at 212 Key Drive in Madison, Mississippi. I also see clients throughout the state of Mississippi online via a secure Telehealth platform. I prefer to see clients in-person for increased connection, but I see clients online who are in need of my specialty services related to OCD, Anxiety, Stress, and PTSD.
Why Do You Specialize in OCD, Anxiety, Stress, and Trauma?
OCD, anxiety, stress, and trauma are the issues that have affected me and my family the most. The struggles that impact us and the people we love are often the ones we carry the most energy, understanding, and empathy for. When clients commit to the therapy process, I commit to doing everything I can to help them recover.
